Description

Join us online to hear Lorraine Downes, one of Penlee House’s amazing volunteer tour guides, discuss the women artist of the early-twentieth-century Lamorna artists’ colony, their inheritance from earlier women artists and the legacy they have left today.

The Lamorna Colony flourished in Lamorna Valley, near Penzance in Cornwall, in the early 1900s. The colony was remarkable for its substantial number of women artists, some of whom went on to have high-profile artistic careers.

Lorraine’s talk will cover a wide variety of artworks from the collections at Penlee House created by women artists in the Newlyn and Lamorna Colonies that have inspired her. She will include artworks inside and outside the frame, works that thrill and touch your soul.

Lorraine has been a volunteer Tate Gallery Guide since 2005 and enjoys sharing her passion for international art and history. She read humanities with Art History obtaining a first-class honours degree and has undertaken further study about the vibrant Cornish Culture.

Twenty years later she is still leading tours at Tate Britain, Tate Modern and gives talks at Tate St Ives. She also launched the guided tour programme at Penlee House Gallery & Museum in 2017, which now has a team of six volunteer guides.

Tuesday 21 July: 1-2pm

Online: link to event will be emailed to ticket holders by 17 July, unless booked after this time.
