The Mayor’s Young Artist 2024/25

When Closing date for applications: 12 noon on Monday 8 April 2024

Are you a budding artist aged 15 -19 who lives, works or studies in the Penzance Parish area? We are looking for a creative and imaginative young person to be the Mayor’s very first Young Artist!

“The Penzance Town Mayor has traditionally appointed army, police and sea cadets every year, reflecting the importance of these services to the lives of our communities. But art and culture also play a huge role in local life, and that’s why this year we will be appointing our first-ever Mayor’s Young Artist” said Cllr Stephen Reynolds, Mayor of Penzance.

“There are so many young people living, working and studying in the Penzance parish who are carrying on our great tradition in the visual arts, and this is a way of recognising and rewarding their creativity and inspiration. I’m really looking forward to working with our chosen artist over the year ahead.”

The Mayor’s Young Artist will have the incredible opportunity to showcase their creativity and flair to the community of Penzance. We are looking for a talented individual, or small group, to create a piece of visual art inspired by the civic year and what Penzance means to you. Your final work will be exhibited at Penlee House Gallery & Museum in May 2025!

During your year as the Mayor’s Young Artist, you will receive a £500 bursary which will include:

There are lots of events that make up the civic year, from Golowan to Remembrance Sunday, which the Mayor attends to represent Penzance Council and the local community. As the Mayor’s Young Artist, you will have the chance to work directly with the Mayor and attend a variety of exciting local events to inspire your final piece! This could include fine art, photography, pottery or film.

“The Penzance parish has a long tradition of inspiring artists to live and work here, which we tell the story of at Penlee House Gallery & Museum” said Anna Renton, Director of Penlee House.

“Penlee House is delighted to be able to offer support to the next generation through the Mayor’s Young Artist. We’ll provide a link to some mentoring and we can’t wait to display the artist’s works in the gallery in May 2025.”

Join us in celebrating the vibrant artistic spirit of Penzance and let your creativity shine as the Mayor’s Young Artist!
