St Buryan By Robert Morson Hughes, (1873-1953)

CPRE Cornwall/CPRE Kernow is the
Cornwall branch of the nation-wide
campaigning network, formerly CPRE but
now called the countryside charity/Aluseneth an powdir. We seek to
protect our Cornish countryside and coast.
The ancient village of St Buryan lies in West Penwith on a wide plateau of farmland. We are showing how it has changed in the past ten years or so.
We do not seek to trace its development from its origin, as a settlement around an early Christian holy place to a working rural village, but our ‘case study’ looks at the accelerated scale of changes in just a few recent years.
Surrounding pieces of land have been developed to the extent that now St Buryan covers far more of the greenfield land that was the original setting for the village, with its little group of buildings around the church and the nineteenth century terraces that were built along the roads that converge at its centre.
Penlee House is a beautiful art gallery and museum, set within sub-tropical gardens, with a great café.
