Identification
Item: Cromwell's Tower, Tresco, Isles of Scilly.
Description: A postcard of Cromwell's Tower, Tresco, at low tide. The script at the lower edge of the postcard reads "Scilly Isles. Cromwell's Tower. Tresco". Cromwell's Tower was built on the site of a Tudor blockhouse in 1650-51 after the Royalist surrender during the English Civil War and commanded the channel between New Grimsby and Bryher. Twenty men manned it while 600 men were garrisoned on the island. In the 18th century, when the Garrison gateway was built, Abraham Tovey, Master Gunner, built the tower's new entrance.
