Item: Hugh Street, St Mary's, Isles of Scilly (No 25954)
Description: Picture Postcard captioned 'Hugh Street. St Mary's, Isles of Scilly'. by Judges Ltd of Hastings. Hugh Town is the administrative town and principal port on the Isles of Scilly and Hugh Street is the main street leading through the centre of Hugh Town from St Mary's Quay. The name 'Hugh' is derived from an old English work 'hoh' or 'Hoo' meaning a promontory or spit of land. The word provides the origin for place names such as 'Luton Hoo' in Bedfordshire and 'Plymouth Hoe' in Devon, also for 'Hoe Point' on the nearby island of Gugh. The Garrison on St Mary's was originally known as 'The Hugh' or 'Hugh Hill'. C.J. Mumford - "The Paper Shop" - has been serving the islands' newspaper, magazine and periodical requirements since 1904. Confectioner, stationer, tobacconist and bookseller, the shop receives the daily papers at around 11am and also stocks games and beach toys. Fred Judge, from Wakefield, moved to Hastings and purchased Algernon Booker's photographic business in 1902. Renaming the firm 'Judges', he began producing picture postcards in 1903. The image of Mumford's, High Street, St Mary's is Serial No. 25,954. Serial numbers 25,565 to 26,079 were produced in 1956.
