Item: The Old Church, St Mary's, Isles of Scilly.
Description: A view across the headstones of the Old Church at St Mary's and the bay beyond. The script at the bottom of the postcard reads "The Old Church, St Mary's, Scilly. 188". An undated Gibson's Guide book to the Isles of Scilly records "In the 18th century it was a larger building in the shape of a cross with galleries inside. The nave was renovated in 1891 and holds occasional summer evening services. There is a Norman arch and pillar in the North wall which could date of the 13th century. Nearby is a clergyman's house, vestry or court house and a few dwellings nearby made it Church-town. The roof had a cross which was taken from the hill on the opposite side of Old Town bay called High Cross where there had been a religious house and village. A generation formerly was another cross which has disappeared. The graveyard is interesting and has the grave of Harold Wilson".
