Item: Porthcressa Beach, St Mary's, Isles of Scilly.
Description: 'Porthcressa, St Mary's, Scilly. No737' is the script at the bottom of this postcard showing a view of Porthcressa beach and people on the beach and mostly children on the rocks. The name translates as 'head of the island'. South of Hughtown, the peninsula jutting out between Porthcressa and Old Town Bay is described as wild and rugged with rocks and boulders of immense size and variety. It is sometimes thought of as the most beautiful part of St Mary's. From 1829 until 1847 six ships were built at Peter Stideford's boatyard here. Between 1840 and 1870, twelve ships were built on the eastern side of the beach in John Edward's boatyard. Source: Isles of Scilly by Crispin Gill.
