Description: BEA were looking for a replacement for the "Rapide" so this could be preparation for the test flight of the de Havilland Heron Mk II Prototype G-AMTS FF on St Mary's Airfield when trials were carried out to establish if the plane could safely land and take off with a full complement of passengers and full fuel tanks circa 1952. Although this was achieved, the runway at 1.717ft was considered too short and a a licence to use the 'Heron' on this service was not granted by the CAA. de Havilland themselves also visited St Mary's with the Heron G-ALZL in 1951 on a proving flight.
