A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: West Cornwall Steam Ship Company, Limited. - Penzance and the Scilly Isles. R.M.S. "Deerhound".

Description: A postcard of R.M.S. "Deerhound" postmark 4 October 1905. The 'Deerhound' was built by J.Jones at Tranmere, south of Birkenhead in 1901 for the North Pier Steam Ship company of Blackpool. In 1905, she was sold to the West Cornwall Steam Ship company and from 1905 to 07 she stood in for the 'Lyonesse' and ran excursions to Falmouth. In 1907, she was sold to Canada's Postmaster General to act as a mail tender for ocean liners in the Gulf of St Lawrence and was renamed 'Lady Evelyn'. In 1914, she helped rescue survivors from the 'Empress of Ireland' disaster (1012 were lost of the 1477 on board). In 1917, she was was requisitioned by the Canadian navy, and was sold to Vancouver in 1922, and served there on the west coast until 1936.
