Item: 'The White Hope' and skiff, Isles of Scilly.
Description: In the early 1920s, a long stay visitor to the Atlantic Hotel was unable to pay his bill. Mr Poynter, the owner of the Hotel, accepted the visitor's boat in settlement of his account. This boat named 'White Hope' was the first motor tripper boat on the Isles of Scilly. Mr Poynter was encouraged by Captain Stephen Jenkins to use the boat as a business which he did. The cost of a trip to the other islands was 1shilling each. She carried 12 passengers and was a great success, soon followed by the 'Bonnie Jean' and other boats. In this image, the 'White Hope' is towing a skiff for landing her passengers on the off-islands.
