Item: Nine Maidens of Boskednan Stone Circle, near Ding Dong, Penzance, Cornwall.
Description: Standing on moorland about 1km NW of Boskednan, which can be reached via the Bone Valley minor road from Heamoor, are the Nine Maidens of Boskednan. Stone circles such as the Nine Maidens were erected in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age by representatives of the megalithic culture. The first mention is in 1754 by antiquarian William Borlase who reported 19 upright standing stones. His descendant,William Copeland Borlase, found a cist and a funerary urn near the stone circle, describing his discoveries in 1872; and the remains of a round barrow can be seen at the SSE edge of the circle. There is some confusion about how many stones once stood here originally. The stones are all of local grey granite with 10 stones remaining, although only seven are standing. They include one stone inclined at a 45 degree angle to the surface; the tallest stone stands 2m high at the NNE of the circle, close to a fallen stone of similar size. Viewed from the centre of the circle these two stones are quite close in alignment with Carn Galva.
