Item: Lanyon Quoit, Penwith Chamber Tomb, (Near Penzance), Cornwall.
Description: On the NE side of Penzance on the Morvah Road, 2.5 miles NW of Madron, this photograph is of Lanyon Quoit, a Penwith chamber tomb at grid reference NG430337. A man in shirt-sleeves and a bowler hat is walking in the background. Lanyon Quoit is perhaps the best known and most photographed of all Cornwall's prehistoric monuments. It is not in its original form. It was rebuilt in 1824 having collapsed in a terrible storm 9 years earlier. Before the storm, the great capstone, 5.3m long and 2.7m wide stood about 2.4m from the ground on four upright support stones (one was not quite tall enough to reach the capstone). In the storm, some stones were fractured and to rebuild in the original form proved impossible. But the Quoit was rebuilt by Captain Giddy with the tackle that was used to replace the 20 ton Logan Rock near Porthcurno.
