Identification

Item: Piper of Boleigh, St Buryan, Cornwall.

Description: One of two Piper standing stones, this one lies North East near Boleigh Farm (NG reference 435248). 'Belerion' by Craig Weatherhill (1981) reports that this is 'one of two Piper standing stones, in adjacent fields to the other, in line with the Merry Maidens. At 15ft, it is Cornwall's tallest menhir. A line drawn between the Pipers and onwards would touch the NW quadrant of the Merry Maidens'. They are believed to be Bronze Age. The Pipers are 317 ft apart. There is a story that the Pipers were peace stones erected by King Athelstan after he had subdued Howal, the last Cornish King in AD 931, but an alternative version from folklore is that they are possibly two outliers of the Merry Maidens Stone Circle to the West, fleeing from the sight of the merry maidens being turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath, and were themselves petrified where they stand today.
