Item: Piper of Boleigh, St Buryan, Cornwall.
Description: The Piper of Boleigh aka the 'Piper Standing Stone' is at NG reference 435248. 'Belerion' by Craig Weatherhill (1981) reports that this is 'one of two Piper standing stones, this one is in the adjacent field to the other, in line with the Merry Maidens. W.C Borlase investigated them and it is thought that they are Bronze Age 2400 BC to 800 BC. The Pipers are 317 ft apart. Possibly two outliers of the Merry Maidens Stone Circle to the West, the name is from folklore telling of two pipers fleeing from the sight of the merry maidens being turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath, and were themselves petrified where they stand today.
