Item: Chun Quoit, Penwith Chamber Tomb, Morvah, Cornwall.
Description: This is a photograph of Chun Quoit Penwith Chamber Tomb, at Grid reference NG 402340 and is just visible from the Iron Age fort of Chun Castle. A Quoit is a ruined megalithic chamber, a type of tomb unique to West Penwith. Resembling a giant mushroom, this is a closed chamber formed by four slabs 1.5m high which lean inwards and support a large convex capstone 3.7m sq and up to 0.8m thick. The remains of the Quoit's former covering barrow which is 0.6m in diameter are still visible although the chamber was investigated by W.C Borlase in 1871 but found to be empty. Large stones on the southside of the Quoit may indicate the former presence of an entrance passage. (Source: 'Belerion' - Craig Weatherhill PIO).
