Item: Morwenstow Rectory, Cornwall

Description: In 1837, with the existing rectory in a ruinous condition, the Rev Hawker decided to build a new one using his wife's money. He took the plan from a series on rectories and chose the spot for building from the fact that sheep sheltered from storms there and so it would offer some protection against rough weather. The chimneys were all built to resemble the church towers of places where he had previously lived - probably Stratton, Whitstone, North Tamerton and Oxford. The kitchen chimney was altered or put up later in the shape of his mother's tomb. Above the front door he placed a plaque: "A House, a Glebe, a Pound a Day. A Pleasant Place to Watch and Pray. Be true to Church - Be kind to poor, O Minister for ever more". Piers Brendon comments on the plaque that "It was perhaps not the most tactful stanza Hawker could have written, his stipend of £365 being rather more than twenty times the annual income of the average labourer in the parish."
