Item: Beachfield House, Alexandra Road, Penzance
Description: "Beachfield House" was built in 1871 and occupied first by Mrs Eliza Dingley who ran it as a boarding house. It was still being built at the time of the 1871 census, but by September, Mrs Dingley had gained permission to transfer her license from 'South Parade' to these premises. The Royal Cornwall Gazette of Saturday, 16 September 1871, reported that "Transfers of Licenses - Mrs Dingley's wine license is to be transferred from South Parade to Beachfield House". Beachfield House, in honour of the owner was also known as "Dingleys" and in the earliest photographs of the building, it is "Dingleys" rather than "Beachfield" that appears above the entrance. Eliza Dingley was boarding house keeper here until her death in 1879, when her daughter, Miss Mary Dingley, continued the business. The Cornishman of 11 December 1879 reported that "Miss Mary Dingley, in consequence of the death of her mother, the former occupier of Beachfield house, asked for the license to be granted to her. - Mr Milton supported the application. - Granted." Mary Dingley continued to run her business here until 1890, when she moved round the corner to No.2 Beachfield Terrace. A Notice of Removal in the Cornishman of Thursday, 8 May 1890, reported that "Miss Dingley begs to announce that she will REMOVE from Beachfield House to No.2 Beachfield Terrace, early in June, which, in future, will be known as Dingleys, Esplanade, Penzance. Beachfield House became known solely as 'Beachfield'. The property became unoccupied in 1901, when it was put up for sale.
