Identification
Item: St Mawgan Cross and Mariner's Grave.
Description: The lantern cross shown in this photograph dates from 1420 and, although it is very worn, the West side depicts the Annunciation and the East, the Crucifixion. Behind it to the right is a memorial made from the stern of the boat that brought ashore 16 shipwrecked sailors from the barque 'Hope of Liverpool', on 13 December 1846. Unfortunately 10 of these sailors whose names are on the memorial were already frozen to death and are buried in the churchyard. Photograph 2016.50.1205 shows a close up of the Mariner's Memorial and more information about the shipwreck is attached.
