Item: Entrance to Penzance Cemetery, Penzance.
Description: A photograph taken from the side of the Cemetery outside the closed front gate, with a lone woman facing the camera. In August 1854, the newly former Penzance Burial Board received letters from Col. Robyns, Rev. Veale, C.V. Le Grice and Mrs Jago, offering to sell land for the purpose of creating the Burial Ground. Land at St Clare was considered the most suitable location and trial pits were dug on the land offered by C.V. Le Grice and that of Mrs Jago. The land offered by Mrs Jago was considered too rocky but that of C.V. Le Grice was suitable. Mr Le Grice was invited to tender the lowest price that he would accept for the four fields and that which he offered amounted to 3 acres, 2 roods and 17 poles. The Burial Ground would require 2 acres, therefore 1 1/2 acres would be available for resale. Mr Le Grice sought £1100 (nearly £112k in 2016) which the Board agreed was a very reasonable price. Extracts from correspondence at the time are attached.
