Item: St John's Church, Penzance.
Description: A side view of St John's Church, Penzance, looking towards the harbour. Designed by Piers St Aubyn FRIBA, St John's Church was built to accommodate the spiritual needs of the inhabitants of the newly built developments in East Penzance "The Battlefields". The Anglican parish church was dedicated to St John the Baptist. The parish was formed from St Mary's parish in 1883 to serve the east part of Penzance, while St Mary's served Penzance west. The church is sited at the top of Trewartha Terrace. It is built in the traditional style of elvan with Hemhill stone dressing. The foundation stone was laid on St John's Eve 1880 and was consecrated on 4 October 1881 at a cost of £7000 (over £781,000 in 2016). It was built of, and consists of, a chancel, nave of four bays, transept, aisles, east and west porches and has one bell and can hold 600 people. The register dates from 1881.
