Identification

Item: Prince and Princess of Wales at Falmouth on 20 July 1903.

Description: This photograph is part of a series of photographs taken of the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Cornwall in 1903 (see also 2016.50.655 to 671). This image shows the Royal party at the Moor in Falmouth for the presentation address by the Mayor. A visit to Falmouth was not originally planned for the royal visit, but the Mayor of Falmouth negotiated an extension of their visit to lay the foundation stone of the new pier. An extract from the Falmouth Packet and Cornwall Advertiser is attached. At the Moor a dais had been erected to welcome the royal couple with some 200 people accommodated in a grandstand. The Princess was presented with an album of views of Falmouth bound in purple Morocco and a basket of flowers (orchids, carnations and greenery) given to her by the Mayor's daughter, Miss Phyllis Banks. The illuminated address was presented in a casket. From the Moor, the next stop was the new pier where the Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone. His permission was sought to name the pier after him and he consented. They also visited the Sailors' Home which on this occasion had no sick or injured sailors to meet.
