Identification

Item: Royal Visit to the Marconi Station, Poldhu, Cornwall, 1903

Description: This is one of a series of photographs (2016.50.666 to 2016.50.670) taken on Saturday 18 July 1903 when the Prince and Princess of Wales visited the Marconi Station at Poldhu. This photograph shows a rear view of the royal party walking around the Marconi Station, with the employees of the Telegraph Station in white uniforms with caps removed turning sideways to watch. Signor Marconi gave the royal visitors a tour of the station. They visited the operating room where they witnessed a message being transmitted and received two messages of welcome from the Lizard station some five miles away (as the crow flies) which demonstrated that messages could be transmitted simultaneously. The Prince then climbed to the top of the main tower - a height of 250 feet, while the Princess started the climb but returned to the ground after a while. Signor Marconi was 29 years old in 1903; six years later he received the Nobel Prize. A further note about the Royal Visit is attached.
