Item: Prince and Princess of Wales in Truro, 1903.

Description: The Prince and Princess of Wales (who became King George V and Queen Mary) in an open carriage, in Daniell Street, Truro, on their drive round the city that followed a luncheon served after the formal opening of Truro Cathedral Nave. This photograph forms part of a series (0655 to 0671) relating to the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Cornwall in 1903. An extract from the West Briton of 16 July 1903, reported that: "The speeches lasted so long that instead of starting at a quarter to four, it was 4.15pm before the Prince and Princess of Wales entered their carriage. Followed by other carriages Lord Falmouth and party, their Royal Highnesses proceeded at a slow pace by way of Lemon Street, Daniell Street, Treyew Road, Station Road, Richmond Hill, Frances Street and River Street to Boscawen Street and thence to Tregothnan escorted as upon their entry into the city. It was a few minutes after 5pm when the procession passed the Municipal buildings on the way to Tregothnan. From the top of Daniell Street to the railway station the route was lined by school children, who, with their parents and guardians, had the exclusive use of the pavements. Each child was provided with a bun and a flag".
