Identification

Item: Carriages outside "The First and Last" Alverton, Penzance.

Description: Royal Mail vehicles and other carriers possibly including the 'Victoria' on the far left, and one of Richard Warren's buses on the right outside "The First and Last". Richard Warren was a Pendeen grocer who also had an extensive posting establishment that included the run from Penzance to St Just. In this image, two boys have been left in charge and one of them is posing with the copper bugle used on the journey. In 1898, this item was stolen from the boot of the bus by a thirteen-year-old, Arthur James, who received six strokes with a birch rod as punishment. The photograph is taken between journeys since there are no horses visible. These would have been in the stables by the blacksmith's down the lane. The approximate date of the photograph can be ascertained from the sign on the inn. The proprietor's name is given as James Terrill. He was landlord from 1893 until his death in 1902, which suggests the picture was taken in that time span.
