Item: Great Work Mine, Godolphin Cross, Cornwall.
Description: Situated NW of Helston and NE of Rosudgeon, on the metal rich saddle of land between Godolphin Hill and Tregonning Hill the original workings of the Great mine date from early 16th century. The land was leased from Sir Williams Godolphin in 1538. Records suggest that 3000 people were employed there in 1584. As the mine expanded in the 18th or 19th century, a large number of smaller mines were taken over and included in their workings. The Godolphin family prospered from the mines on their land. In 1930, the last reworking of the mine took place.
