Identification

Item: Crown Engine, Botallack Mine.

Description: A detailed photograph of Crown Engine, Botallack Mine, showing the Winding Engine House, the Pumping Engine House and the position of the platform to gain entry to Boscawen Shaft. In 1815, a shaft was sunk from Crowns Rock, Botallack and a pumping engine was installed. Working continued through to the late 1820s. The lease for the mine was bought by Steven Harvey James who became purser in 1836. In 1842, a rich copper lode was discovered. In 1858, the Boscawen Diagonal Shaft was begun and was sunk for a distance of 2616ft which allowed access to deeper ore deposits under the sea. The final depth was 1360ft under the sea and the workings extended 2580ft beyond the cliffs. The future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra visited the mine in July 1865 and entered via the 'incline' shaft.
