Item: Crowns Section of Botallack Mine, St Just.
Description: "Crowns", part of Botallack Mine, showing from left to right: the pumping engine house; Wheal Button shaft; winding engine and boiler house; Burrow of 'Tailings'; and Tramway at the top. In 1815, a shaft was sunk on the Crowns section of Botallack for de watering. The mine struggled to survive and was offered up for sale in 1835. Steven Harvey James became purser in 1836 and in 1842 a rich copper lode was discovered. It was mainly due to the determination of Steven Harvey James that the mine began to expand. Production reached its peak through the 1860s but ceased to work in the mid 1870s, despite the best efforts of Steven Harvey James Junior who took over after his father died in 1870.
