Item: Sennen Cove, Cornwall.
Description: A view of Sennen Cove, with from left to right: Whitesand Bay; Gwenver; Pilchard cellars; 'Vellandreath'; the Lifeboat house; Roundhouse; Chapel Idne and Cove Hill. Sennen is the first and last parish in the county and is made up of 2230 acres of land. Chapel Idne cottages were demolished to make way for a car park. Behind the cottages are the remains of a mediaeval chapel. The photograph pre-dates the addition of a breakwater which was built in 1908 after an earlier one washed away. The first lifeboat, a 25ft x 8ft x 6ft 10in, rowing boat, arrived in June 1853. Three years later, a carriage was brought to the Cove to help with launching from the sands and later a slipway from the boathouse was built. Source: 'The Bode of Sennen', Sennen Local History Group.
