Item: Morrab Gardens with Market Cross
Description: Two girls seated beside the Penzance Market Cross in Morrab Gardens. The gardens cover an area of approximately 3 acres largely on the south side of Morrab House which was built for Samuel Pidwell in 1841, and was later acquired along with additional land by the Corporation of Penzance in 1888. Tenders were invited for converting the grassy slope running from the house down towards the sea into a municipal park. The winning entry was from garden designer Reginald Upcher of Portland Place, London; his design which was followed faithfully, was opened to the public in 1889. The Market Cross is said to date from the 11th Century and stood previously in the Greenmarket at the corner of Causewayhead (formerly known as North Street). This location or one slightly to the west along Alverton Street was said to have been the centre of the old town boundary circle. Subsequently the cross was moved to the then Market House in 1868 and was relocated to Morrab Gardens in 1899 by the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society. The cross now stands adjacent to Penlee House in Penlee Park.
