Identification

Item: Gurnard's Head Hotel from the St Ives to Land's End Road.

Description: A view of the Gurnard's Head Hotel from the road from Newmill to the junction of the St Ives to Land's End Road, with large baulks of timber on the roadside, in the foreground. The farm behind the hotel is farmed by the Trembath family and farm on the right is "Treen" farm, which was farmed by the Berryman family (now farmed by William Prowse of Zenner). Haystacks stand between the two farms. The large baulks of timber on the roadside could be salvage from a shipwreck, and the round ends might be an indication of the timber being beaten on rocks. The wagon tracks on the unpaved road were subsequently repaired with new laid stone, which would have been broken from large rocks by 'stone spallers' sitting at the side of the road in lay-bys. They were paid by the Parish at so much a yard: a yard of stone was measured by a conicle pile with a base of three or four foot.
