Item: Knill Steeple, St Ives.
Description: Knill's Steeple built by John Knill - Customs Officer & Mayor - in 1782 as his mausoleum. (He died at Gray's Inn Square in 1811 and is buried in London). In 1797, Knill wrote his Trust Deed for the Knill Ceremony to be held on St James' Day - 25th July - every five years. The Mayor, Vicar, Customs Officer, 2 widows & 10 little girls, daughters of fishermen, mariners or tinners, a fiddler and Master of Ceremony take part. The girls and widows dance around the Steeple to the Furry Dance tune, then the Old Hundredth Psalm 'All People that on Earth do Dwell' is sung. Knill left and annuity to support the event & charitable gifts. His fine Georgian House, its upstairs, remains in Fore Street, St Ives.
