Description: A view of St Leonard's Chapel & Smeaton's Pier, St Ives, with from Left to Right: Railway Viaduct (built in 1877); Porthminster Cottages; Nets drying Smeatons Pier; The Terrace; Pilots' Office (now the Harbour Office); and St Leonard's Chapel in the foreground, with an unidentified man leaning against the wall and young boy walking by. The medieval St Leonard's Chapel was the fishermen's chapel where mass was said for them. Originally, this site was outside the harbour as the medieval quay was at Carn Glaze, near the present Fishermen's Co-op. Smeatons Pier was completed in 1770 and extended in 1888-90. St Leonard's Chapel was restored by Edward Hain in 1886. This image appears to be before this restoration.
