Identification

Item: Perrow's Temperance Hotel, Chapel Street, Penzance

Description: John Perrow was a deacon in his Baptist Church and an avowed teetotaller. At first he'd been a tailor and outfitter but, spotting the need for a temperance hotel, he set up at No 8 Chapel Street, but as these premises proved too small, in late 1887 he relocated across the road to Nos 54-55 as shown in this photograph. Extensive changes were made to the original building to create what was arguably the finest temperance hotel in Cornwall. To the left is a schoolboy holding a dog, who may have attended the school next door at No 53 Chapel Street. Part of the sign for Mount's Bay Academy is visible. The academy had been run since the 1850s by Thomas Gordon Teague, originally from Exeter. The school prided itself on not using corporal punishment (a sign of enlightenment for the time) and was amalgamated with Clarence High School in 1891 under the guidance of his son to form Penzance Collegiate School.
