Item: Funeral procession of Mr AK Barnett, the late mayor of Penzance, progressing up Market Jew Street.
Description: The photograph, taken on Market Jew Street, is part of the large funeral procession through Penzance which took place on 2 May 1914. The mace bearers, Sergeants Bicknell and Barnicoat who stand either side of PC Osborne holding the chain of office on a purple pall, are in front of the hearse which carries the oak coffin. Flags throughout Penzance flew at half-mast and shops remained closed until the cortege had passed. The service took place at St John's Church. The Cornish Telegraph (of 7 May 1914) reported that that Mount's Bay Studio soon had this photograph of the funeral procession in its window, along with a range of portraits of the late mayor. Andrew Ketchan Barnett had been Penzance Mayor from 1906-1910 and also from 1912-1914 when he died in office aged 62 on Wednesday 29 April 1914. In his earlier life, he had been the manager and chief assayer at Bolitho's Tin Smelting Works at Chyandour.
