Identification

Item: The Dairy in front of St Michael's Mount

Description: A photograph taken from the foot of St Michael's Mount with the dairy in the foreground and a grassed area for dairy cattle in front of the dairy. On the north side of the Mount, near the Pilgrims' Steps, the Victorian dairy is a miniature copy of the kitchens at Glastonbury Abbey with a high corbelled octagonal roof with mullioned 3-light windows and a ventilator. The building is divided into two, the kitchen has a fireplace for making cream and junket, and a sink with wooden draining boards: the other side has slate worktops which could be surrounded with cold water for cooling the produce. The well just outside the door provided a constant source of cold water. It was designed by Piers St Aubyn after 1876 to replace an earlier house or dairy. A herd of Jersey cows was on the island until 1909. Source: St Michael's Mount, the National Trust report by Peter Herring 1993.
