Item: Cemetery entrance gatehouse, St Michael's Mount
Description: A photograph of St Michael's Mount, showing the principal entrance to the castle (not the visitors' entrance), the Cemetery entrance gateway, Lodge and Bowling Green. The St Aubyn arms and an 1877 date stone are carved over the carriage doorway, which has a double chamfered 4-centred arch on moulded jambs and framed doors. To the west, is a similar smaller door for pedestrians. The wall is crow-stepped over the carriage door. The Lodge was built in 1877, with this date on the gutter and extended in 1891 with this date on the chimney stack to the north gable, to oversee the gateway. It is two-storied, is large and comfortable and had a gabled wing to the rear with an octagonal stair turret. The mullioned windows have hood-moulds. The Bowling Green had houses and fish cellars on it up to the early 20th century. Source: St Michael's Mount, the National Trust report by Peter Herring, 1993
