Identification

Item: Gulval Village

Description: A photograph taken towards the inn, with a man in a white coat presumably selling produce to a lady in white apron in the foreground (possibly the butcher given the dog's interest) from a cart. The Old Inn was built in the 1890s, replacing the Old Thatched Inn, which had stood on the same spot. The farmhouse adjoining has a date stone of 1895, and the door to the left led into the Men's Institute and the room above was used for functions, all of which have now been incorporated into the 'Coldstreamer' pub. The terrace on the right of the photograph was built around the same time with a village shop on the end of the white building. Further along was the blacksmiths shop (now a dwelling house) and the barn in the background was part of Trevean Farm which is also now a private house. This photograph was taken before 1910 as there is now a horse trough in the centre of the square, built by R.F. Bolitho in 1910 with the inscription "for the benefit of everyone". After the Second World War, the inn was renamed 'The Coldstreamer' in memory of Michael Bolitho who was killed in Egypt in 1942.
