Item: Celebrations at Newlyn, on the completion of the North Pier.
Description: A posed photograph of adults and children in their Sunday best, on the Strand against the Norway Ice Stores, under a banner saying "Newlyn's Hope Fulfilled". The photograph was taken to mark the completion of the North Pier and laying of the commemorative stone on July 4 1894; St Peter's Day. A snippet from the Cornishman of Thursday 5 July 1894, reported that "Across the Strand and we see the offices of Mr B.M. Bradbeer looking exceedingly tasteful. A large motto, "NEWLYN'S HOPE FULFILLED" in white letters on a pink ground is surmounted by the royal coat-of-arms, and neatly set in art fabric of soft and delicate colour".
