Item: Fishing scene, Newlyn
Description: Lowestoft mackerel fleet at Newlyn c. 1880s. Pads full of mackerel on the beach in the foreground attended by a number of men with several children looking on including one young girl and two small boys in front of the pads. The photograph was taken before building of Newlyn Harbour (South Pier 1885-86, North Pier 1886-88 and 1888-94). The Lowestoft drifters first came to West Cornwall in 1860 after the completion of the Royal Albert Bridge. Those who fished on a Sunday - the majority - were refused permission to land at St Ives.
