Item: Newlyn Old Harbour in Mackerel Season c. 1880
Description: Newlyn Old Harbour before the Harbour was built (S.Pier 1885-86; N.Pier 1886-88 then 1888-94). See also 1991.650 for a similar image. The lugger alongside on the right of the photograph is the 'Eliza Jane' 190PZ, 44ft in length, owner Silas Bath from 1877 to 1903. Punts are being rowed (not sculled) into land catches during Newlyn mackerel season. Groups of people, presumably fish buyers, crowd around the punts which are landing into horse drawn carts. The buyers include several fish wives. The nearest cart on the left is stacked with empty baskets and a large pile of pads (mackerel baskets with lids) is in the left foreground.
