Item: Street-an-Nowan and Newlyn from Tolcarne
Description: An early view of Tolcarne and Street-an-Nowan with Newlyn in the background. Taken about five or six years before the New Pier was built, the luggers all lie off in Lodgia (the sheltered place), otherwise known as Gwavas Lake. The large building in the centre ground was the Bridge House (William Carter's Shop) - which burnt down in 1894 - by the lower bridge across the river. The lean-to roof on its left covers the Newlyn Institute, which held a reading room and small library, where village meetings were held in the 1880s. Tolcarne Higher and Lower Mills are in the foreground along with the Ice Store and Fish Curing & Packing Stores. On the back of the photograph is written 'Newlyn 1879'.
