Item: The "Ben-My-Cree fishing vessel at Newlyn.
Description: A photograph of the Mousehole fishing vessel "Ben-My-Cree II" PZ545 showing from left to right the boiler funnel (steam boiler to power capstan and line hauler), mast case, capstan, steam line hauler, long line baskets, engine exhaust, cabin stove pipe, wheelhouse and open hatch to cabin. "Ben-My-Cree II" PZ545 was built Porthleven, Bowden, 1912. Registered 1913 for Thomas & Lewis Hicks. 53.7 ft registered length x 15.8ft beam; 40 tons; 48 hp engine. The "Ben-My-Cree II" was one of the first large motor fishing boats built in Cornwall. She was a very successful boat and fished herring from Great Yarmouth, Peel I.O.M., Ardglass; Howth, Stornoway and Castlebay Barra. She was also a pioneer motorlong liner. She was sold to Ireland in 1935 and renamed 'Howth Head'. In this image, she carries no punt, so is not on a distant voyage. A duplicate image is at 2016.50.211.
