Identification
Item: Members of the Nautilus Club possibly on St Clement's Island, Mousehole.
Description: A photograph of 16 members of the Nautilus Club posing for the camera on a rocky outcrop, which might be St Clement's Island, Mousehole. Many are wearing striped jerseys marked with the initials PNC (Penzance Nautilus Club) and the name of a boat. The boat names included: Hettie, Syren, Fairy, Nymph and Sylvia. In the foreground, the name of the boat written within a flag design is 'Mabel'.The Nymph and Sylvia later reappear as small rowing boats in the East Esplanade Regatta of 1888 (Cornish Telegraph 13 September 1888). In the middle of the photograph wearing darker clothing, a waist coat with watch chain and a cap, is an older man thought to be John Nicholls (Gaffer) the boat proprietor and founder of the club. The photograph can be dated to the 1880s when the Nautilus Club was active, but if the identification of John Nicholls is correct, the date is probably early 1880s. See also 2016.50.205 and 206.
