Item: German barque 'Moltke' of Hamburg in Penzance Dock
Description: A view of Penzance Harbour with the German barque 'Moltke' of Hamburg in the centre and the Smack 'Maud' PH55 to the left and an unidentified barque to the right with people gathered on the quay. The iron barque 'Moltke' of Hamburg 827 tons discharged grain from Konigsberg (now Kalingrad) for Branwell's Mills. The ship is 'light' as it's carrying no cargo in this photograph. She went afterwards into PZ dry dock where Capt Krawz opened his ship to the public. She left PZ fro Cardiff with 300 tons of roadstone ballast. 'PH 55' the Plymouth trawl smack 'Maud' was built in Mount Ballen in 1882 for W.S.Kelly, but had several other owners.. Registered length 62.5ft x 17ft beam. Broken up in 1927. The group of boats on the far left are all trawl smacks. More information about the 'Moltke' is available.
