A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: Mackerel boats sailing into Penzance Harbour April/May 1885.

Description: Mackerel boat 46 PZ 'Spring Flower' with foresails on the windward side of the masts; 105 PZ 'Robert' and a third unidentified boat sailing into Penzance Harbour by the wreck buoy of SS 'Ransome' (which was wrecked 17 April 1885). 46 PZ 'Spring Flower' was 46.7 ft long and 24 tons. Owner and skipper: Arthur Williams, Newlyn 1879-1891. Sold to W. Rouffignack, Skipper J. Wright. 1990 E Murnsh & W Strick, Skipper F.Clarke. 1909 to Lowestoft. At one stage recorded as dandy (ketch rigged) but a lugger in this photograph. The 105 PZ 'Robert' (originally PE the former Penzance registration). 43' long. 20.5 tons. 1869-1885 Charles Trewavas, Mousehole. Thomas Jos Johns 1887, Plymouth.
