Item: Cleaving Granite 'Moorstone' possibly on the Isles of Scilly.
Description: 'Moorstone' was the way of winning granite from prehistoric times to the early nineteenth century when quarries were established. This picture shows a method of 'cleaving' by the "wedge and groove" method, where the grooves were cut with a pick then wooden wedges were driven in, which were then soaked with water and the swelling of the wood split the rock. From around the 1800s, steel plugs and feathers were inserted into a rack of holes and hammered in sequence to split the stone.
