Identification

Item: Carn Euny Fougou, Sancreed, Cornwall.

Description: The entrance to Chapel Euny subterranean passage and room, at Sancreed, also known as Carn Euny (Fougou) and the Giant's Well. An extract from 'Journey Into The Stones' by Ian Cooke (1987): "In the 1950s the government took over the site. Research suggested that the site had been occupied for 700 years from 500BC. The fougou, an underground passageway, is part of a site consisting of stone and wooden housing, free standing partly below and partly above ground level. Recesses in the fougou could be blocked off by stone slabs. Carbon dating of charcoal found it to have been in use 300BC to 250BC and probably abandoned peacefully in the Middle Ages". Surrounding fields were used for growing barley and rye. Fougous existed only in Britain, West of the River Fal.
