Item: Poltair Mansion House, Madron
Description: A view of the fire damaged Poltair House, with two unidentified people stood either side of the building. The glass house to the left of the house is still standing although part of the roof has collapsed, but the roof of the main house and windows are missing although the chimney stacks remain. According to a local newspaper at the time, the fire was 'practically subdued when the water supply ran out and had there been a constant supply for the next quarter of an hour, there is little doubt that the flames would have been entirely extinguished'. Poltair Mansion House was built in 1802 for Richard Hichens originally of St Ives who married Margaret Trevaylor, and had nine children. Around 1800 he acquired the land of Poltair and built his mansion, finishing it in about 1802. Poltair became the home at various times of Dr Scobell, John Richards Esq, Russell Howell Esq, Col Trelawney and by 1893, was the residence of Lieut-Col Otho Glyn Bolitho.
