Identification
Item: The Bush Inn, Morwenstow, Cornwall.
Description: A photograph looking towards the Bush Inn at Morwenstow with two unidentified men outside. The inn's history goes back to at least the thirteenth century and has the reputation of being one of the most haunted inns in the region (Williams, About Hawker and Morwenstow, 1996,16). During the eighteenth century it became infamous as a centre for smugglers and wreckers who profited from the many boats that foundered on this rough coastline. The inn still flourishes today, although unfortunately the thatched roof was lost in a fire in November 1968. The wooden barrow in the foreground, whether already in this position or moved by one of the Gibsons' helps the composition of the photograph.
