Item: Padstow Harbour.
Description: A view of Padstow Harbour, showing from left to right: Higher Yard Dock and vessels in the Higher Yard; Ketch 'Ystwith'; Court House; Customs House and Customs Boat House and Gig; 'Sail Loft'; a Ketch discharging cargo; Steam tug 71 PW 'Princess May'; a Hotel; and local schooner and rigged barge. The ketch 'Ystwith' was converted from a schooner to a ketch c. 1894. She was registered in Padstow in 1891. The steam tug 'Princess May' arrived in Padstow in about 1895 and replaced the old paddle tug 'Amazon'. The railway arrived in Padstow in 1899 on the site of the Higher Yard (left in the photograph), which dates the image to about 1895-98. The schooner rigged barge (right in the photograph), was a rig unique to Padstow. They were used to take cargo up the River Camel to Wadebridge. See also 2016.50.1207.
